The sayings of the six lines
- At the first small fault a mild halt is enough, before it has grown — a small restraint now spares a larger intervention later.
- When the obstacle is plain, bite through it resolutely — here sternness is fitting and no one will reproach you for it.
- If you strike something old and hard, it may leave a bad taste — hold nonetheless to the matter, not to the feeling of grievance.
- A hard obstacle asks for persistence and firmness — do not take it on until you have enough calm and a clear head.
- Decide justly and with knowledge of the matter — the strength of a decision lies in its fitness, not in its harshness.
- If you ignore the warning and let the fault grow, biting through it will already be hard — heed it while it is small.
