After the experimental confirmation in 1960, research on the Schumann resonance gradually developed into an independent field at the boundary of geophysics, atmospheric physics and the study of lightning.
After the experimental confirmation in 1960, research on the Schumann resonance gradually developed into an independent field at the boundary of geophysics, atmospheric physics and the study of lightning. A number of researchers contributed to its development: D. D. Sentman produced classic reviews and characterizations of the phenomenon (see Sentman 1995), A. P. Nickolaenko and M. Hayakawa developed both the theory and the observations, G. Sátori focused on the connection between the resonances and global lightning activity, and E. R. Williams on the link between the resonances and tropical temperature.
A key milestone was the year 1992, when E. R. Williams showed that the intensity of the Schumann resonance is closely related to the temperature of the tropical troposphere, and proposed using the resonance as a global tropical thermometer. Williams 1992
