The Schumann resonance today serves as a tool across many fields. In climatology it functions as a global tropical thermometer and an indicator of lightning activity (cluster G) Williams 1992. In the area of space weather it makes it possible to monitor the state of the ionosphere and its reaction to solar activity (cluster H). For geophysics it is a passive probe of the electromagnetic environment of the Earth-ionosphere cavity. And in planetary exploration the same resonance principle is applied to the atmospheres of other bodies, where it may help to characterize their electrical properties and to search for lightning activity (cluster L).
These applications share a common foundation: forward modeling of the cavity (cluster E) and inversion of measured data (#78, #79). Multi-station networks and quantification in absolute units Pracser 2019Bozoki 2023 move the SR from a qualitative indicator toward a measurable quantity usable in climatic and geophysical studies.
Marginally, the SR also appears outside its main field: the low-frequency electromagnetic transients of the SR are relevant as one of the noise sources for ground-based gravitational-wave detectors, which must carefully subtract such a background. This connection illustrates how the global electromagnetic field permeates even entirely different experimental fields.
