There is a hypothesis that terrestrial life evolved throughout its entire history in the constant presence of the weak field of the Schumann resonance, and that this "electromagnetic backdrop" may have been one of the factors to which organisms adapted. From this follows the speculation that the *absence* of this field — for example during prolonged shielding — could have physiological consequences.
Historically, the so-called "bunker" experiments on circadian rhythms from the 1960s-70s are recalled in this connection, when volunteers stayed isolated from natural time cues; part of their interpretation also mentioned a possible role of weak electromagnetic fields. These interpretations are, however, disputed, and an unambiguous causal role of the SR specifically cannot be derived from them. The whole idea remains a hypothesis: it has not been confirmed by controlled studies that would isolate the SR from the other variables, and it must be distinguished from the proven existence of circadian rhythms as such.
