Hexagram 34

The Power of the Great

Dazhuang 大壯

You hold a great deal of strength right now, and for that very reason it matters how you use it.

A question to reflect onWhere does your strength carry you forward, and where does it begin to crush what you meant to protect?
AdvicePush only where it makes sense, and keep the added strength in reserve rather than in a wide swing.

The sayings of the six lines

  1. Strength is only setting out from the base and pressing into the toes — to charge out fully this early means to collide, so hold it back a while longer.
  2. The inner support is firm and the pull is straight, and the way opens on its own — precisely for this, lead your strength calmly, so it does not sweep you into haste.
  3. Here strength easily turns into swagger, and the ram breaks its horns against the fence — only the one who does not flaunt his power passes through unscarred.
  4. When you stop pushing by force, the fence gives way and the horns come free — you have drawn near to power, and now it matters whether you press patiently or brace against resistance in vain.
  5. From the summit you need not conquer anything roughly — release your excess strength like a herd onto open pasture, and you will see that lightness achieves more than force.
  6. The ram has caught its horns in the fence and can go neither forward nor back — when strength has led you into a dead end, stop struggling and patiently work yourself free.

The reading in practice

When to read The Power of the Great

When this image comes up

Hexagram 34, The Power of the Great, is best read at a moment when something like this is in play: you hold a great deal of strength right now, and for that very reason it matters how you use it. The main motif is not a label for the situation, but the direction in which your attention is meant to move.

What the situation asks for

The lower trigram Heaven (Qian 乾) shows the inner movement, while the upper trigram Thunder (Zhen 震) shows the shape that turns outward. Push only where it makes sense, and keep the added strength in reserve rather than in a wide swing.

Work

At work, The Power of the Great does not ask only about performance. It leads you to let the theme "great power, measure in strength" show in your next step, your pace or your responsibility.

Relationships

In relationships this image is not a verdict on the other person. It rather opens the question of what should be said, borne or left to ripen: Where does your strength carry you forward, and where does it begin to crush what you meant to protect?

Shadow / risk

The risk is to overdo the image's main motif: great power, measure in strength. The top line recalls the extreme form of the situation: The ram has caught its horns in the fence and can go neither forward nor back — when strength has led you into a dead end, stop struggling and patiently work yourself free.

A question for your journal
