The sayings of the six lines
- Consider whom and what you are beginning to follow, while it is still the start and can easily be changed.
- If you seize on the first alluring closeness, you may lose the support that gives you a true direction.
- If you cleave to what leads you onward, you must let something easier go — name for yourself what you are giving up.
- When others begin to follow you, watch whether you gain devoted people or only those who pursue their own gain.
- Follow what is good and firm in itself, and then you can go after it with a calm conscience.
- Weigh a bond that holds you too tightly — even sincere devotion can turn into a prison hard to leave.
